Eoin Jess is happy to pledge his future to Bradford City when the dust has settled.
The former Scottish international, City's 14-goal top scorer last term, has ruled out a return north of the border despite summer interest from Dundee United and Kilmarnock.
And he is keen to banish the turmoil of the last couple of months and spearhead the Bantams into the new campaign.
Jess said: "What's being going on has obviously left a bitter taste in the mouth. It's very difficult for anybody in any job if your wages aren't going in.
"But you have to adapt the best you can and try to be professional about things. That's what we have tried to do since coming back to training and the spirit has been great.
"Nobody knows what the future will hold
although providing things are sorted out with our contracts, then I've no problem about staying with Bradford.
"Of course the club could turn round and get rid of me. I know they have to off-load players to bring new ones in so that could affect any of us.
"But I've stated I don't want to go back to Scotland. I'd rather stay down here and I'll be quite happy if it's still at this club."
Dundee United have been keen on Jess for months but Alex Smith, his first manager at Aberdeen, has reluctantly accepted defeat.
Former Bantams boss Jim Jefferies was also
linked with taking Jess to Kilmarnock while
Walsall and Nottingham Forest have registered an interest.
Jess added: "The PFA have been a great help and made everyone quite clear that the whole thing will be sorted out soon. It's been difficult but coming back to pre-season has made it all seem more normal.
"Like the other lads, I'm just concentrating on getting fit and prepared for the new season.
"Last year was so up and down. Having started so well it all died a death although towards the end of the season things started picking up again.
"Unfortunately with everything that has happened during the summer that seems a long time ago.
"But that's all best forgotten and with a new season coming up we can all look ahead to better times."
