CLEAR skies greeted thousands of people to Yeadon Carnival at the weekend.
Forecasts of heavy rain had forced the organisers to make plans to hold the event inside Yeadon Town Hall, but Saturday turned out to be one of the best days of the summer so far.
Steve Maw, organiser, said: "It went absolutely brilliantly. Considering the weather was supposed to be bad, we had a really nice day."
Winners of the float competition for the fourth year running - judged by recently elected Aireborough councillor, Dr Makhan Thakur - was Queensway Primary School.
Mr Maw said: "The school performed songs from their hugely successful production of Joseph and his Amazing Techni-colour Dreamcoat which they had been performing at school all last week."
Carnival queen, Laura Jackson and one of her attendants, Sophia Frain, also came from Queensway Primary School. Other attendants, Rachel Armitage and Abigail Lawrence, came from South View Junior School.
After watching the parade down High Street, crowds were treated to a variety of entertainment.
"There was a wonderful carnival atmosphere provided by a combination of the Systematic Steel Band and the unbelievably warm weather," said Mr Maw.
Up to 3,000 people attended the event, which was held at its original site next to Yeadon Methodist Church.
Mr Maw said: "Considering at one time it looked like the carnival wasn't' going to go ahead, it went brilliantly and should be here for many years to come.
Carnival goers were treated to performances by the Tracy Syril Dance Academy, and by the Rawdon Park Twirlers.
People were also encouraged to get up and dance with the Rodeo Girl Line Dancers.
Mr Maw said he had been delighted with the amount of support given to the event by businesses in the town.
"It's good that the local community for showing that they still appreciate a carnival in Yeadon."
Results: Best float: Queensway Primary School, Joseph. Best window display: Dress Circle; carnival queen and attendants: Laura Jackson, Queensway Primary School; attendants: Sophia Frain, Queensway Primary School, Rachel Armitage, South View Junior School; Abigail Lawrence, South View Junior School.
