Traders at Shipley's indoor market fear they may lose their livelihood if plans to close the hall are given the go ahead.

Members of Bradford Council's corporate overview and scrutiny committee supported the closure at a meeting in March this year. The council's markets service department is now set to produce a report to the committee which details proposals for the site.

The preferred package, costing an estimated £784,000, would see 42 open stalls and 16 enclosed units on the current market place with aesthetics such as outdoor heating.

But traders say they have not had the chance to put their views across.

"We were all asked to a meeting in March, but it was a shambles," said David Burke, chairman of the Shipley Indoor Branch of National Market Traders Federation.

"At no time have they approached the people in here to say this is what we're proposing, this is what the outdoor units will look like."

But Malcolm Veigas, the Council's head of markets, said the council had carried out extensive research in December, 2001.

"We consulted the tenants of the hall, the outdoor market traders, shoppers, local businesses, town centre management and local councillors," he said.
