A group of residents in Bradford Moor have put the Changing Rooms team in the shade by transforming a derelict house into an exotic dream home - for just £500.

Modern artistic techniques, such as mosaic work and glass painting, have been used to give each of the rooms its own fantasy theme including the sea, a 50s American diner - and even a romantic Baroque master bedroom.

Clare Hughes, one of the artists who helped the group to realise their decorating dreams, is pictured here sprucing up the bathroom. She said: "We wanted to show people how to use an artistic medium to decorate their homes.

"They have put a lot of creativity into this project and the results are spectacular."

Broken tiles, mirrors and a splattering of blue paints have been employed to create a bathroom based on the theme of bubbles.

The project was arranged by Artwork and aimed at giving people the skills and confidence to imaginatively decorate their own homes on a budget.

A group of seven house-proud locals have spent two days a week for the last three months on the project.

The finished house will be open to council tenants on Tuesday, July 23, between midday and 3pm so they can see what is possible on a tight budget.

One of the trainee decorators, mother-of-four Gill Thomas, said: "It has been wonderful to learn how to put your artistic ideas into action.

"To see them come alive has been amazing.

"When you see it on television it looks so easy, but you have to learn the techniques to get it right.
