Crime rates in Cullingworth have almost doubled from the same period last year.

The number of recorded crimes in the village increased from 17 in June last year to 33 over the same month this year.

PC Ian Hemsworth told parish councillors that the rise could be attributed to more people reporting incidents to the police.

He said the village also suffered from criminals "travelling" into Cullingworth from other areas.

The crimes last month included 12 burglaries, six of which were from homes, nine vehicle related crimes, one aggravated taking of a vehicle and one case of GBH.

"A great deal of the crime could be designed out," said PC Hemsworth. "One of the most active crimes in the division is car theft where the keys are stolen from homes.

"We would ask people to make sure their cars are locked and not to leave car keys on work tops or anywhere in the house where they can be seen."

Councillor Jaqui Guy said: "What would be helpful is if we could see detection rates, because that can be reassuring for people."

Parish councillors in Cullingworth have voiced support for building a new primary school in the village.

But they are not making a formal recommendation for planning consent until they have considered the fine detail of the scheme.

Cullingworth Primary School has lodged an outline planning application to develop a new school on a Bradford council allotment site next to Halifax Road.
