Denholme Children's Gala went with a bang this year as villagers celebrated the Queen's Golden Jubilee in colourful style.

The family fun day on Saturday in Foster Park finished with a giant firework display at night to celebrate the monarch's 50 years on the throne.

In a break from tradition the gala was opened by a village youth representative, Savannah Astell-Burt, instead of a gala queen and attendants.

The 13-year-old student at Bingley Grammar School opened the event after a procession through the village from Ogden Lane to the park.

One of the organisers, Denholme town councillor Maxine Brotherton, says: "We had a wonderful day, the weather was good for us and there was a really nice atmosphere throughout the afternoon and evening.

"The falconry display was very popular and it was good to see so many people coming back in the evening for the firework display, which was also really good."

Other attractions on the day included a funfair, Punch and Judy show, dog show, a majorette display by the Keighley Comets and music from a German Oompah band.

Denholme Scout members who are raising money to pay for their trip to the world jamboree in Thailand organised the tea tent.

Councillor Brotherton adds: "We would like to say a big thank you to the Scouts for all the help they gave the gala committee.

"As well as providing refreshments they helped us set up the gala and put away items at the end." She adds that the attendance was roughly in line with galas in previous years.
