Pupils at Glusburn Primary School will be the coolest kids in town on Tuesday.

And they are hoping for bright sunshine because they will be wearing sunglasses for the day to raise money for charity.

The school is taking part in Shades for a Day, which is run by the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association, and every 'cool' youngster and teacher will pay £1 to don their sunglasses for the day.

The pupils have been learning about eye care and guide dogs as part of their preparations for Shades for a Day, and have even designed their own groovy sunglasses to wear on Tuesday.

Through Shades for a Day, Guide Dogs aims to raise awareness of the importance of eye care in the sun and the harmful effects of ultra violet light on the eyes.

The Association is advising everyone to look out for the CE mark when buying sunglasses, which is the best indicator of protection.

Last year over a quarter of a million people took part in Shades for a Day, raising almost £150,000, and this year the charity is hoping to attract half a million participants.

Geraldine Peacock, Chief Executive of Guide Dogs, said: "Too often we ignore our most precious sense - that of sight. Shades for a Day is a fun way of reminding everyone to look after their eyes and be 'cool' at the same time.We are committed to both funding ophthalmic research and educating youngsters."
