Emergency work is to be carried out from Monday in a street due to close the following week for a four-month sewer and water main replacement scheme.

Heavy rain has led to the partial collapse of a section of sewer in Oakworth Road, Keighley.

Yorkshire Water, and its contractor partner Mott McDonald Bentley, will move in next week to carry out repairs.

Temporary traffic lights will be in operation.

Work on the major £800,000 replacement scheme -- outlined in last week's Keighley News -- will begin as planned on July 23.

During that 16-week project, a section of Oakworth Road will be closed to through traffic and diversions will be in place.

A YW spokesman said: "The scheme outlined last week is still going ahead, exactly as stated. There are no changes to the start date, road closure or diversion route.

"However, in addition, we will be undertaking emergency sewer repair works next week. The reason is that following recent heavy rain, a camera survey of the sewers revealed that a section along Oakworth Road had partially collapsed and was partially blocked.

"These emergency repairs will take one week, from Monday. We will need to work in one half of the public highway, so a traffic management system will be in place using temporary traffic lights. Through traffic will therefore be able to travel along Oakworth Road next week."

The need for major work on the sewerage system in the busy street was first identified last autumn when a sewer collapsed, shutting part of the road for several weeks.

The closure caused huge congestion in the town, with problems compounded by resurfacing work in Halifax Road. That work was suspended by Bradford Council after a flood of complaints from motorists.

l Villagers in Cullingworth are preparing for months of disruption as Yorkshire Water carries out essential repair work.

The company is overhauling the main water pipes in the village, which will result in roadworks and interruption of supplies.

The work is expected to be finished by October.
