Two of the district's firms have made it into this year's Top Track 100.
The survey, which is conducted by the Sunday Times, ranks the UK's hundred largest private companies by sales.
John Lewis topped the table with £173 million profits and £4bn sales.
Littlewoods, which is based Liverpool, came fifth and is the largest private firm in the north with sales of £1.9bn.
Ilkley-based building contractors NG Bailey came 63rd with £1m profits and £416m in sales.
The company provides mechanical and electrical engineering as well as contracting services for public sector and private customers.
NG Bailey employs more than 4,000 staff through a network of offices across the UK.
Car dealership JCT 600, which is based in Bradford, came 98th in the top 100 with £275m sales. The chain of dealerships, which is run by Jack Tordoff, employs more than 700 people.
The twelve companies on the league table in the north of England made combined sales of more than £8.2 billion and employ around 94,700 staff.
The combined sales of Top Track 100 companies were £72.2bn, the 100 firms employ more than 700,000 people.
Most companies on the league table are headquartered in London - 29.
South east England has 22 of the firms, while the Midlands has 21, north England 12, eastern England six, Scotland five, South west England four and Wales one.
