Road safety chiefs have started a website to warn drivers where high-visibility and mobile speed cameras are located on Bradford's roads.

The website, produced by the West Yorkshire Casualty Reduction Partnership, details all the permanent cameras across West Yorkshire and provides updates of where mobile speed cameras are to be used during the next two weeks.

The website address is www.safetycameraswestyork shire.co.uk.

The move is the first step in a programme of initiatives, including leaflets in libraries across the district, to give drivers and visitors information to help them safely plan their journeys.

High-visibility speed cameras were installed at some of Bradford's worst accident black spots in May in an attempt to cut the number of deaths.

Cameras were introduced on Cottingley Cliffe Road and Leeds Road, Shipley, and near Thornton Grammar School in Thornton Road where five people, including a two-year-old boy, were killed in two accidents last year. The speed limit on Thornton Road was also cut from 40mph to 30mph.

Steve Thornton, chairman of the West Yorkshire Road Safety Strategy Group, who is also a senior traffic and road safety engineer in Bradford, said: "We have made clear we do not want drivers to be caught by the cameras.

"Our aim is to encourage drivers to slow down, observe speed limits and, in doing so, contribute to reducing casualties on West Yorkshire roads. If people know where fixed and mobile cameras are located they can add a few minutes to their journey time and drive within the law."

Mobile cameras are in position in Thornton Road and Leeds Road, Shipley, until Sunday. They have been introduced by West Yorkshire Police as an interim measure on roads scheduled to have fixed cameras installed in 2003-4.
