The sun finally appeared on Sunday for the finals day of Ilkley Tennis Club's annual club tennis championships, and a large turn out of members were treated to some fine tennis.

There were 23 different finals completed on the day and it wa snot until 9.30 in the evening that the veterans' mixed doubles finalists eventually left the court.

Youssef Khan and Jenny Sellars beat Richard and Becky Bourdon in the final event of the day.

One of the highlights of the day was the ladies singles final where Maria Kouvatsos won a demanding three set encounter against last year's champion Angela Harker.

Maria who won all the junior category titles last year is now the ladies' club champion at the age of 11. Surely the youngest ever ladies' champion.

This made up for Maria's earlier loss in the under-18s final. Krista Royston played an excellent match and was delighted to beat Maria and take the Under-18s title. Krista added this to her Under-16s title which she won beating Charlotte Turner in the final.

Simon Ickringill once again has his name on the men's singles trophy following his solid victory in two sets over Andy Hutchinson. Andy who had an excellent win in the semi-finals over Martin Parkes did win a title later when partnering brother Gareth. They took the men's doubles final over Simon Thomas and Phil Maunsell.

Kyle Brassington scored an excellent win over other top junior Ben Murray Potts to take the Under-18s championship.

Possibly the most colourful match of the day was the boys' Under-18s doubles final with not a white shirt or a pair of white shorts in evidence. The club rule of predominantly white clothing was relaxed some years back and the boys took advantage of this, sporting all black kit and some colourful combinations, no doubt emulating the dress of their favourite senior players on the international circuit.

Incidentally the subdued tones of Ben Murray Potts and Mihalis Kouvatsos beat the all black of Kyle Brassington and garish red of Saad Abbas!

The predominantly white clothing in the senior and veterans' events brought

an air of normality to the proceedings but there was plenty of colourful play on view.

Angela Harker made up for her disappointment in the ladies' singles to win both the senior and veterans' ladies' doubles with partner Sallie Ryle.

Barry Cox and Carol Nixon, playing late into the evening, eventually overcame James Booker and Georgina Jackson to take the mixed doubles title.

The championships were once again sponsored by Hawksworth Physio ands Sports Clinic and Jackpot on the Grove. Yves Dereix Of Hawksworth Physio and sports Clinic presented the trophies and prizes to the finalists.
