householders are being warned to be extra vigilant after a Transco uniform was stolen from one of the company's vehicles.
Police fear that the clothing -- taken from a Nissan van parked in Fernbank Drive, Gilstead, on Tuesday of last week -- could be used by a criminal in an attempt to gain access to a property.
Det Insp Shaun Berry, of Keighley CID, said: "It is possible that this uniform may form part of a bogus official type crime. We would advise the public to be vigilant and to check carefully the identity of any unsolicited caller before allowing them into their home -- if they are in any doubt, do not let them in."
His advice is echoed by Transco, which said it was extremely rare for any of its staff to call unannounced at people's homes.
A spokesman said that where access was needed to a property, a pre-arranged appointment was made.
All Transco staff carry ID cards, with a phone number to dial to double check the caller's authenticity.
