The 13th annual Institute of Journalists Royal Charter Meeting at Ripon tomorrow is in aid of The Sailors' Families' Society and the six-race programme begins at 2.25.

Principal race at 4.05 is The Ripon Bell-Ringer Stakes, a £12,000-added handicap contest over the extended one mile and a half, won last year by Steinitz, owned by Benny Andersson, a member of the pop group Abba.

I mention this purely because the winner was trained by John Dunlop and I fully expect the same handler to be on the mark again this year with another three-year-old Persian Lightning, who has an impressive record this season, having won two of his three outings and finished runner-up in the other. John Carroll will do the steering.

Carroll could well have a double for the Dunlop family, this time aboard Ed Dunlop's Russian Dune in the one and a quarter mile handicap at 3.30. However, Amanda Perratt's stable is firing at the moment and her improving four-year-old Quiet Traveller cannot be ignored. Henry Cecil's Transit will be a warm order in the final race at 5.10.

Local trainer Kevin Ryan will not be at Ripon. He's set his mind on much richer pickings in the £135,000 Weatherbys Super Sprint at Newbury, a five furlongs dash for two-year-olds at 3.35, in which he runs Miss Mirasol, rated the best juvenile he's ever had.

The horse has improved again after winning a hot Listed race at Newmarket and can be expected to run a big race under stable jockey Fergal Lynch. Of the southern trainers, Richard Hannon has multiple entries and the best of them may be Monsieur Boulanger, with Frankie Dettori taking a rare ride for Hannon.

Sir Mark Prescott's Foreign Affairs will be a warm order in the Listed 1m 2f race at 3.00, while David Elsworth's Finished Article can again go close in the one mile handicap at 4.10.

At Newmarket, where racing takes place on the July Course, I give a major chance to Sir Michael Stoute's Green Line - Richard Hughes rides - in the one mile handicap at 3.50. Marcus Tregonning's Esloob should run a big race for Richard Hills in the Listed 1m 4f contest for fillies and mares at 3.15.

It's a massive day for Scoop6 punters, with Channel 4 televising seven live races from Newmarket and Newbury. The biggest pot ever is likely to be up for grabs and after some shock results in recent weeks I have a feeling that it will be won this weekend. As usual, take note of tomorrow's racing press for the nominated Scoop6 races.

The tenth annual 'Red Shirt Night' charity meeting at Pontefract takes place tonight - the course's fourth and final evening fixture of the year. Once again, revenue will be raised for The Injured Jockeys Holiday Fund. Racing starts at 6.40.
