Teachers have been praised at a Bingley primary school where children achieve well above national averages in tests.

An Ofsted report concludes that Myrtle Park Primary School in the Poplar House area is "an effective school" giving the taxpayer good value for money.

A 'short inspection', reserved for schools deemed to be doing well, was carried out in May and the report is now published.

The school's 248 children are largely white and only nine per cent are eligible for free school meals, indicating low levels of social deprivation.

When the children start school, their ability is regarded as "average" but by the time they leave, they achieve highly in the Key Stage 2 SATs, which are done at the age of 11.

This is due to good teaching in the core subjects of English, Maths and Science, the report says. But it warns: "The teaching of some subjects is not as strong. Pupils' knowledge of history, geography and religious education facts are below what one might expect for their age."

Head teacher David Fox said: "This confirms our self evaluation of our strengths and areas for development."
