England are likely to hear the shock news today that Darren Gough will be unfit for the first Test with India which starts at Lord's on Thursday.
Gough was unable to take the field this morning on the final day of the Roses match at Headingley because of further soreness in his right knee.
He was having treatment for the problem but Yorkshire coach Wayne Clark said he did not think that Gough would take any further part in the match.
"England will be notified and it will then be up to them what further treatment he may need but I would say at this stage that he must be considered very doubtful for the Test," said Clark.
Gough is making his first Championship appearance of the season in the Roses match, specifically so that England can learn if he is fit for a five-day Test, but the answer would seem to be that he is not.
After his third short stint yesterday, Gough left the field with about ten minutes play remaining and did not return.
