Bungling Council workers have renamed a Bradford village - by putting signs up in the wrong place.

The signs reading "Harecroft - please drive carefully" have been put up on Haworth Road on the outskirts of Wilsden.

Local residents have told Bradford Council they have put the road signs up at the entrance to the wrong place.

They are about half a mile from the beginning of the hamlet of Harecroft, which has about 100 houses.

Carole Greenwood, of Wilsden, said the signs were part of a plan to reduce the speed limit on the main B6144 to 30 mph through Harecroft, which she welcomed.

"It's a good thing - as much as they have acknowledged Harecroft exists, there have never been any signs before," she said.

But she said the signs were confusing.

"It looks so funny that when you are driving down towards Wilsden it says Harecroft."

Mrs Greenwood said the signs should be moved elsewhere.

"I think they should be on the other side of the roundabout by the Ling Bob pub," she said.

"A stranger coming in will think they have missed Wilsden and gone straight into Harecroft."

She said Harecroft was not featured on any signs and it was a good idea to introduce them, but in the right place.

Mrs Greenwood said she also welcomed the lower speed limit but she thought it should be lower still through Harecroft and not go up to 40 mph outside the village towards Culling-worth.

Wilsden Village Society member Norman Barwick said: "It's a bit stupid really."

He said further down the same road there was a sign showing the entrance to Wilsden.

Mr Barwick agreed that speed was a problem on the road through Harecroft.

Council leader Councillor Margaret Eaton, who represents Bingley Rural ward, said she would be looking into the matter.

She said she knew the Council had been doing sign replacement work in the district.

A Bradford Council spokesman said: "We are aware of residents' concerns and are planning to remove this reference to Harecroft immediately.

"We are also looking into how this error occurred."
