Bracken Ghyll: The Ladies of Addingham Bracken Ghyll all enjoyed the Lady Captain's Day which was held in bright, sunny conditions with a slight wind. This was favourable golfing weather and saw all the main competition winners reduce their handicaps.
The competition format was a stableford off full handicap. The new members (without handicaps) were also encouraged to join in a special 12 hole stableford competition. After the competition all the players joined the Lady Captain for High Tea in the clubhouse followed by the prize presentation.Thanks were given to the Lady Captain for a lovely day.
The winners were:1, J Stead (47 points); 2, E Coombe (43 Points); 3, S Stones (40 Points); 4, P Greenfield (38 Points). Non LGU Prize - E Roughley (40 Points). Non Handicap Prize - L Carver (24 Points). The Longest Drive was won by P Newman.
Ladies Invitation Day was played in very hot, sunny conditions. A very competitive field played a four-ball, better-ball stableford off 7/8ths handicap. After the competition, all the ladies remained for a meal in the clubhouse followed by the prize presentation.
The winners were: 1, L Sayers and D Mackinlay (Silsden) 41 Points; 2, J Smith and S Hope (Silsden) 40 Points; 3, L Hall and B Leeming (Oakdale) 40 Points. Nearest the pin on the second was L Riley and the nearest the pin on the 13th was B Leeming (Oakdale).
Dave Gilbert was blessed by glorious conditions for his Captain's Day with the course in tip top condition. 75 players competed in a Stableford Competition with the winners being:
1, David Enion (14) 41 points (after countback); 2, Jim Bird (22) 41 points; 3, Tom Witherington (15) 40 points; 4, Robert Fernyhough (19) 39 points.
The competition was followed by an evening meal and disco which was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. The winner of the Captain's Quiz was Nick Cook.
Bracken Ghyll has also announced that annual fees from August 1, 2002, to April 30, 2003, have been reduced by 25 per cent. Prospective members are invited to call the clubhouse on 01943 831207 for full details.
Otley: In the L A Wood Scratch Qualifying Competition, a 36 hole event, golfers enjoyed improving conditions with the top eight scores qualifying for the quarter and semi-finals. Although some big names bit the dust there was still some excellent golf to be admired.
The eight qualifiers were: A Driver, 36 holes off scratch, 146; A Dufton 146; P Glendinning 148; A Holmes 148; J Finch 149; C Toft 150; D Holder 153; J Sibbles 156.
Andrew Driver, by virtue of a better back 18, won the D C Walsh Trophy for the best qualifying score. The 16 year-old made it a week to celebrate for the Driver family following his brother Mark's hole-in-one the previous Monday.
Both lads are active and supportive members of the Junior Section and have worked hard to achieve their success.
A busy week began the previous Sunday with a joint match at Shipley Beckfoot. Twentytwo Otley pairs ensured that the match was fully subscribed to.
The prize-winners from Otley were Mr and Mrs J Harder, Mr and Mrs C Palmer, Mr D Payne and Mrs C S Thompson and Mr and Mrs D Shaw.
BEN RHYDDING: On Sunday, President's Day dawned hot and sunny. In these perfect conditions Trevor Lockwood broke his own record for the course which stood at 64. the Stableford Competition, which attracted 88 players, was a 7/8th of handicap and the handicap limit was 20, which made it more difficult.
Results: 1, T Lockwood, 43 points; 2, J Kirton, 40 on last nine from 3, I Clilverd, 40 on last nine from 4, I Cowan, 37 on last nine. The new course record still held by Trevor now stands at 63.
