A Keighley couple who were engaged within four months of meeting each other celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary yesterday.
Ann and Harold Walmsley, of Farish House, met in 1940 at the former Prince Smith and Stell engineering foundry in Keighley.
Mrs Walmsley, 82, originally from Denholme, says: "I worked on munitions at the factory during the war for about a year.
"I met Harold and we started courting - we were engaged very quickly, within four months in fact."
Mr Walmsley, 85, who grew up in Keighley worked at the foundry for 35 years before moving on to security work.
The couple were married at what was Denholme Methodist Church and travelled to Hatfield for their honeymoon.
Mr Walmsley explained: "We went down to stay with my relative there.
"That was a sight, London in the blitz. It was a difficult time to have a wedding in those days. You had to save up, but we didn't do too badly."
Although the couple's cake was plain, as they couldn't get icing, they both recall the day fondly.
The couple have one daughter, Diana, two granddaughters and two great grandsons.
"The family is mainly based over in York so we're going over to spend a week there to celebrate soon," says Mr Walmsley.
They also enjoy regular trips abroad to Spain.
Mrs Walmsley says: "We used to travel over there a lot more frequently, and we still manage to visit sometimes.
"We've had some great times with friends over there - we've had a good life together."
