Unemployment reached record figures this month. Provisional figures show that the total number of unemployed on July 14 was 1,613,956. This is 6.8 per cent of the working population and is an increase of 163,901 over June. It is 150,500 higher than in July last year. In Bradford the number of unemployed adults increased by 359 to 8,675.

Among today's holiday crowd were several hundred Bradford engineers. Two large firms - Jowett Cars and Crofts Engineering Ltd - both started their annual holidays at the same time. Engineers in the Bradford district do not have any special holiday week, though the bulk of them go on holiday during Bowling Tide Week. English Electric Co employees are at present on a fortnight's holiday.
