Hull City 3 Bradford City 0: A damp and dismal Boothferry Park was an apt venue for what could have been Bradford City Football Club's last ever game.
The decaying stadium provided a suitably gloomy venue for what could prove to be the final throes for the Bantams after 99 years of football.
The last-minute strike by the sacked City 16 turned what should have been a run-of-the-mill pre-season fixture into a strangely farcical affair.
What took place on the pitch seemed of little importance as Bantams fans count down to tomorrow's decisive meeting.
Lewis Emanuel, one of only five contracted City players, put in an excellent performance.
But his display, and that of the rest of the side, will be of little relevance after the meeting.
There will be either no club to play for or one in which very few of those performing at Hull last night will regularly feature.
Once the players did take to the field, and it was only 40 minutes before kick-off that they arrived, it was a fairly even start.
A typical pre-season friendly saw very little goalmouth action overall and too much sloppy football, with both sides equally to blame.
But after 23 minutes an Ian Ashbee run led to a cheeky flick through to Stuart Elliott, Hull's £230,000 summer
capture from Motherwell, who slotted home from ten yards.
Facing less football league experience than in the recent trip to Bradford Park Avenue, Hull took control of the game with Gary Alexander redirecting home the second 12 minutes later after Ryan Williams drove in from the edge of the box after a
corner.
Trialist Paul Evans, captain for the day, put in a strong performance, the highlight a 45-year attempted lob, a trick he has performed successfully during his time with former club Brentford.
And the bizarre sense of occasion increased when referee Carl Boyeson came out for the second-half in a bib to cover up the colour clash with the visitors.
The lack of cohesion in the Bradford side was noticeable, although flashes of brilliance were shown by Evans and Andy Gray, with Gus Uhlenbeek also putting in a strong performance from full back.
But a quick break from Ryan Williams led to Elliott rattling home his second, and the fifth of his pre-season, to kill off the game with three minutes remaining.
The match itself was largely scrappy and memorable only for its significance and timing.
And those who did bother to fork out the £2 slashed admission fee might want to think about keeping their programmes.
If tomorrow goes badly, they could be worth a few bob in the future.
City: Siddall, Uhlenbeek, Emanuel, Evans, Morgan, Bower, Standing, Fishlock, Gedman, Gray, Lee. Subs: Forrest, Brodie, Penford.
