Manningham sweet-maker Mohammed Rahman, pictured, made history when he was invited to present his Asian sweets to Her Majesty the Queen during her visit to a mosque in Scunthorpe.

Owner of the Sweet Centre Mr Rahman, 45, together with his father Abdul Rahman, 74, personally presented a stunning brass chest that contained 48 colourful sweets of eight different flavours.

Mr Rahman said: "We have been in the business of Asian sweet making for 38 years. The Queen was really chuffed and we were really over the moon."

The Sweet Centre was selected by the former Scunthorpe MP of Crosby Town South, Jawaid Ishaq MBE, now a key figure of the Muslim community and chairman of the South Humber Racial Equality Council.

Mr Ishaq said: "They were chosen because they are traditional sweet makers and have a good reputation. They have done the Muslim community proud."

The visit last Wednesday was deemed historic to Scunthorpe, particularly in jubilee year.

The Queen visited the mosque, IT suite, sports hall and offices that are accommodated within a single site and which "will serve the Muslim community in Scunthorpe for the next 100 years".
