Several hundred men who served in the Far East during the 1939-1945 war met at Cleckheaton to celebrate the 32nd anniversary of VJ Day. After parading from the Princess Mary Playing Fields, the men, all from branches of the Burma Star Association in the North East, attended a service at St. John's Church, where the Vicar, The Rev. Malcom Inman, chaplain to the Spen Valley branch, received branch standards.

A 17-year-old youth from Ravensthorpe, Dewsbury, and four boys, three aged16, and the other 15, were each fined £1 at Dewsbury today for playing "brag" in a public place. Police Constable Bickerdyke said he saw the five accused lying on the grass playing cards for money. He was later joined by two other police officers, and when the defendants saw him move from his place of observation, they ran away but two were caught.
