A sports foundation which will provide health checks for young athletes has been set up in memory of a fell runner who died at the weekend.

John Taylor, 33, had been a member of Bingley Harriers since the mid-1990s.

He was a regular part of its championship-winning fell running team, and just two days before his death had competed in the final leg of the British Fell Running Championships in Wales.

Mr Taylor collapsed with breathing difficulties on Sunday at his home in Bradley, Huddersfield.

His fiancee Kirstin Bailey, who lives in Addingham, tried to resuscitate him.

She is also a member of Bingley Harriers. Earlier this year the couple won their respective sections of the White Wells Fell Race on the day they had collected their engagement ring.

Today, Miss Bailey was too upset to discuss the foundation. She had become engaged to Mr Taylor at Easter and the couple had planned to marry in Switzerland next year.

An ambulance crew were called after Mr Taylor collapsed but they were unable to save him. It is thought he suffered a heart attack.

With the help of the running club, Miss Bailey has set up The John Taylor Foundation for Young Athletes.

Alan Oates, Bingley Harriers club secretary, explained the idea behind the foundation.

"The family didn't want flowers but wanted to set something up to help the young athletes coming through," he said.

"We've had a word with the club president and treasurer and have set up an account for donations. We will now set up some system of applying it to the athletes."

Mr Oates said the club has around 300 youth members. Although it is not yet clear how the foundation will work, it is hoped to provide health checks for the athletes.

"What the family is quite keen on is some way of providing health scans after what happened to John," he said.

Mr Oates said that Mr Taylor would be greatly missed by the club members.

"There have been a lot of phone calls going round," he said.

"Lots of people know him and they are deeply shocked. He will be deeply missed.

"I have just got entry forms for national competitions coming, and John would have been the first name on the list."
