A drink-driver who mounted a pavement and knocked over a lamp post which killed a 43-year-old woman has been told he faces a prison sentence.

Mother-of-one Kathryn O'Shea was standing at the junction of Norcroft Street and Handel Street in the Listerhills area of Bradford last September when Pinu Khan's Honda Accord uprooted the lamppost.

Khan, who was later found to be over the drink-drive limit, claimed that he had swerved on to the pavement to avoid another woman who ran in front of his car that night.

The 51-year-old married baker, of Queen's Road, Manningham, denied causing Miss O'Shea's death by careless driving while over the limit but at the end of a three-day trial yesterday a jury at Bradford Crown Court found him guilty by a unanimous verdict.

The victim, who has a 26-year-old son, was pronounced dead at Bradford Royal Infirmary within an hour of the accident.

The prosecution alleged no other woman was involved in the incident and that Khan wasn't concentrating as he drove down the road.

Khan, who had no previous convictions, told the jury he had a cold that day and as well as taking medication he had only eaten some biscuits at lunchtime.

The prosecution pointed to the absence of any brake marks at the scene of the accident, but Khan said he had to swerve to save the other woman and did not think about braking.

He admitted to the jury that he had drunk two Bacardi and Cokes about three hours before the collision but he told police at the time he did not think he would have been over the limit.

A breath-test proved positive and a blood sample later revealed a blood-alcohol reading of 92 micrograms - the legal limit is 80.

The jury spent one-and-a-half hours considering their verdict and after he was convicted Judge Peter Benson told Khan: "You must understand a sentence of custody is unavoidable in this case."

Judge Benson granted Khan bail so a pre-sentence report could be prepared, but no date was fixed for his sentence.
