A young disabled wheelchair-user claims he is being left stranded at bus stops because drivers are refusing to lower the ramps for him to get on board.

Babar Yaseen, pictured, of Ouzel Drive, Clayton Heights, uses the 645 and 646 buses to get from town to his home in Cooper Lane.

But he said he was frequently left behind because he could not get on to the buses.

Mr Yaseen, 24, who suffers from cerebral palsy, said: "I have complained to the bus company but still it is happening to me.

"If I could use the bus properly it would help make me more independent. But like this I am just hanging around for ages or have to have someone with me."

Mr Yaseen works as a Millennium Volunteer at the Citizens Advice Bureau and is joining Shipley and Baildon Volunteer Bureau's management committee, giving IT support to other people with disabilities.

"I am not saying it happens every time but it is really an inconvenience and a nuisance.

"Also I feel discriminated against when I am left there and others can get on."

Tariq Ahmed, young person's inclusion worker at the Asian Disability Network, said Mr Yaseen's treatment was a disgrace.

"This young man is being prevented from living independently. He is trying his best to integrate into society and drivers who refuse to put down the ramp should be disciplined.

"It only takes 20 seconds to put down the ramp, the buses have them so there should be no excuse."

Gabriella Liebig, marketing officer of bus company First in Bradford, said: "We give full training to all drivers to ensure that they fully understand the benefits of offering this service to the customers. Therefore I was very disappointed to learn of this incident. We will be investigating it further to ensure that the same situation does not occur again."
