Lesley Vainikolo will undergo extra practice on his defence after his wobbly display at Halifax.

The Volcano was substituted half an hour from the end of the Bulls'

25-8 win at The Shay last night after a string of errors.

He struggled under the high ball as he did against Leeds last week and was replaced by Nathan McAvoy, who came up with a last-minute try.

Bulls assistant coach Darrel Shelford said they will take a softly softly approach to rebuild Vainikolo's dipping confidence.

He said: "He is one of those players you put your arm around and he will get better.

"He's shown glimpses of what he can do over the last ten weeks and we've just got to keep helping him along, make him improve and he'll be fine.

"It's very important that the other guys keep patting him on the back and saying we'll be fine.

"It's an individual thing for Les and putting in a bit of extra training with his kick catch or reception will do the trick - and the other guys will help him do that.

"I just think it's a confidence thing with him at the moment and once he regains that he will be all right again."

The Bulls were made to work for their latest victory in heavy rain which made for treacherous playing conditions.

"Considering the awful weather I thought we handled it pretty well in the first half," added Shelford. "But in the second we came up with too many errors."

Halifax coach Steve Linane had to play the second half without centre Colum Halpenny, who dislocated a shoulder that will keep him out for the rest of the season.

Linane, who played three 18-year-olds, said: "You couldn't fault the effort from our guys against a team as good as that. And with an ounce of luck I think we could have won it."
