A couple whose toilet regularly churns out effluence are hoping their four-year battle to get their drains fixed is almost over.
Harry and Doreen Padgett have been too worried about the appalling state of their drains to invite their five grandchildren to stay at their home in Draughton Street, Bankfoot, Bradford.
Yorkshire Water has finally located the source of the problem and confirmed it was the company's responsibility. They said it would be fixed within a month.
The Padgetts, who have lived in their Bradford Council-owned home for 17 years, are now hoping the days of using chemical toilets and calling out the Council every time their lavatory overflows are numbered.
Mrs Padgett, pictured, a school crossing patrol woman, said: "The smell is disgusting and it's a health hazard. It comes back up my toilet, up my sink, and even into the bath.
"I have cried to my councillor and shouted and bawled at the Council. I sometimes felt I had nowhere to turn to."
Mrs Padgett said each time it happened the Council would send out a worker to remove the blockage, temporarily solving the problem.
"It all happened again last week," she said. "We heard the tell-tale gurgling and glugging, so I called the Council and Yorkshire Water again.
"They put a camera down the drains and found a shattered pipe further along the drain.
"Yorkshire Water said they would fix it within a month. It will be such a relief when it is all over. But why has it taken several years?
"The Council and Yorkshire Water have passed this problem from one to the other."
Bradford Council has apologised to the couple for the delay.
A Council spokesman said: "Yorkshire Water has now accepted responsibility for the problem and has assured us the matter will be resolved within a month."
