A nine-year-old girl with a brain tumour has had her recovery boosted by friends, family and her favourite footballer.

Vanessa Molineux, pictured, nicknamed Nessy, was a typical tomboy who enjoyed playing football and supporting Leeds United, especially Robbie Fowler.

She is now partially paralysed on her left side after five operations in three weeks to remove the tumour.

And her family from Delph Hill, Bradford, have been overwhelmed with the support they received.

Her father Carl Molineux, 38, said: "She got a surprise package from Robbie Fowler and you should have seen her face. He sent her a personal letter, a signed pair of his own boots, Leeds United goodies and signed photographs."

Vanessa will need physiotherapy, chemotherapy and radiotherapy to complete her treatment. Her parents are now planning alterations to the home to cope with her weakness.

"She still recognises people but she's not so much of a motor-mouth anymore!" said Mr Molineux.

Mum Angela, 37, said: "She is still smiling and has a sense of humour."

The couple, who have another daughter, Claire, 14, were told about the tumour after Vanessa suffered bouts of sickness and fits.

"Everyone has been great and we really need to thank the staff at both the Bradford Royal Infirmary and Leeds General. Our local club is also holding a disco at the end of the month," said Mrs Molineux.

"The money raised will go towards whatever Nessy needs when she comes home. It's all such a shock and we don't know how our lives will change."

The Back to School disco is on Friday, August 23, at 8pm at Hudson's Club, Maine Street, Wyke. Entry is £2 and fancy dress is preferred.
