Firefighters waded into the River Aire to rescue a man whom they feared could be swept away in the swollen waters.
The officers from Shipley fire station persuaded the man to get out of the water before he entered the most dangerous stretch of the river at about 5.10pm yesterday.
Police called for assistance from the fire service when two people they had been pursuing jumped into a shallow stretch of the river off Dockfield Road, Shipley.
Shipley Station Officer Stephen Nunn said one of the men was seen running through the water and towards the main river when they arrived at the scene.
A number of firemen jumped into the water and eventually persuaded him to leave the river for his own safety.
Mr Nunn said: "If our men had not persuaded him to stop, he would almost certainly have been swept away to his death in that water."
