An 11-year-old girl was crowned the King of Rock 'n' Roll last night as eleven Elvises battled it out for charity.

St Margaret's Church in Ilkley was the unlikely venue for an "Elvis-a-thon" called Rockin' In The Chapel which saw the aisles rock with the King's classic sounds.

About 100 people were at the event, held on the 25th anniversary of Elvis Presley's death, which was in aid of the Telegraph & Argus Bradford Can...Cancer Research Appeal and the church's New Parish Hall Fund.

The overall winner was 11-year-old Jessica Meehan, of Allerton, Bradford, who wowed the judges with her voice, hip-swivelling dance moves, and authentic white jewelled jumpsuit, gold glasses and quiff.

She delighted the crowd with her renditions of Treat Me Nice and Return To Sender.

Jessica said she was thrilled to win two tickets to see tribute act The Elvis Collection at Leeds Grand Theatre and a backstage visit. Her mum Andrea said she was very proud of her talented daughter.

The prize for best Elvis lookalike went to Simon McIntyre, of Normanton, who won record vouchers. The 43-year-old was a dead ringer for the King, in a bright blue and silver jumpsuit.

Best Elvis soundalike was won by gold-jacketed Charlie Sloan, 36, of Odsal. Originally from Ilkley, he sounded exactly like the King singing Stuck on You and One Broken Heart For Sale. He took home two Elvis Collection CDs, poster and brochure.

Another pint-sized performer, six-year-old James Luke Hudson-Wright, of Baildon, received a chocolate bear for his brilliant performance of All Shook Up and Teddy Bear. Everyone who took part was given a certificate.

The judges, Bradford Can...Appeal manager Tish Burton and Tim Blott, Regional Managing Director for Newsquest Darlington, York and Bradford, said they had a memorable evening.

Mrs Burton said all the competitors had been excellent but Jessica shone through.

"It was an easy choice. She had such stage presence and confidence," she said.

Rockin' In The Chapel was the brainchild of St Margaret's Church member Hugh Little and Father Richard Hoyal.

"We do a lot of concerts and it was good to do something a bit different," said Father Hoyal. "It brought in a lot of people for whom Elvis is someone special."

The evening was compered by Bradford nightclub owner and businessman John Pennington.

Peter Henderson, 56, of Beeston started the evening off in style with his denim glittery jumpsuit and heartfelt performance.

Terry Strauss, 62, of Shipley, sounded authentic on My Boy while former curate of St Margaret's the Rev Alan Brown showed off his fantastic voice on Are You Lonesome Tonight?

"Yorkshire Elvis" Eddie Vee brought the evening to a rousing close and the night was rounded off by a singalong.

Tesco supported the event by providing refreshments and some of the performers were backed by a live band.
