Organisers of a unique security scheme are claiming a perfect record in the battle against Burglary after fortifying the homes of 2,000 victims.

No burglar has been able to breach a home adapted by the Speed project since the charity was founded three years ago.

Speed, which stands for Securing Property Economically Effectively Daily, is the only scheme of its kind in the country.

The Government-funded charity based at Eccleshill police station sends security experts to the homes of victims.

A property survey is carried out to identify entry spots most vulnerable to burglars which are then fortified.

The service is free, with residents asked to make a donation for whatever work has been carried out. The group also contacts neighbours in areas plagued by break-ins to give warnings and security advice.

Burglary rates in some areas have fallen by 26 per cent.

Trevor Williams-Berry, 65, and his wife Irene live at Bredon Avenue in Wrose. They called in the group after a number of their neighbours were burgled.

A chain was put on their front door and new locking mechanism installed at the back door.

Mr Williams-Berry said: "We felt vulnerable because youths tend to hang out near our house.

"We thought it would be a great idea to get everything checked and now we feel that our security is 100 per cent."

Chief Superintendent Phil Read, divisional commander for Bradford North, said: "Speed reduces crime and supports victims, may of them vulnerable."
