A councillor is to press for a review of waste and other storage arrangements in communal areas of council flats following a fire which trapped three pensioners in their flats.
Firefighters from Mirfield and Dewsbury were called to the block of sheltered housing at 7.57pm on Wednesday in Beech Street, Mirfield.
The fire was in the stairwell and three people had to be rescued by firefighters. Two of those were then taken to Dewsbury District Hospital by ambulance, suffering smoke inhalation.
Councillor Beverley Warby, Kirklees Council's lead councillor for housing, said: "The fire service are reported to have been critical of aspects of the storage of materials in stairwell communal areas.
"This was serious incident, but the consequences could have been much more serious if it had been later at night."
