A go-slow is being staged by about 150 assembly workers at the Highfield Road, Idle, plant of Rank Hi-Fi Ltd, manufacturers of loudspeakers. The action follows a meeting today of the workers, mainly women, who are members of the Electrical, Electronic, Telecommunication and Plumbing Union (EEPTU). It follows a refusal of the management to re-time jobs on the assembly line which, claim the workers, would lead to an improvement in bonuses.

Elephants marched in stately procession from Forster Square Station to Peel Park where the Bertram Mills Circus opens. They attracted a crowd of spectators to the centre of the city. Each elephant carried a road safety slogan on its back.
