Keighley's fledgling Town Council has put a realistic item on the agenda for discussion - the call for a ban on smoking in Keighley Bus Station.
No matter what the outcome - the decision lies with Metro - it is a positive and many believe achievable aim by the town councillors.
The council has taken a lead, debated an issue in the council chamber, taken into account opposing views, held a vote and decided on a course of action. This is a classic example of how a local forum can work towards bringing about a possible change especially if the council canvasses the views of the people it represents.
As to the issue itself, Metro is trialling a smoking ban in Huddersfield Bus Station.
The company has obviously formed a view as it has barred smoking in its travel centres. Our straw poll revealed the predicted mixed reaction, with the strongest anti-ban views being expressed by the drivers. Once again a healthy stance has been taken, as Keighley & District Travel has banned smoking in the canteen.
The drivers say they smoke in the bus station as they are not allowed to smoke on the buses or in their canteen. Apart from being outside in all weathers, the bus station is the only place they can have a cigarette.
Town Mayor Martin Leathley says the trial at Huddersfield is very encouraging. Metro says it will consider extending the ban to all their bus stations across West Yorkshire following an evaluation of the trial results. The earlier the outcome the better.
