Fire station staff in West Yorkshire will observe a one-minute silence on Sunday, September 8, to commemorate firefighters who have lost their lives on duty.

The silence, at 3.30pm, will pay tribute to firefighters around the world who have lost their lives while fighting fires, including those who died in America on September 11 last year.

Chief Fire Officer Phil Toase also wants to encourage members of the public to join in wherever they are at the appropriate time.

"Last year's tragedy in New York highlighted to people all over the world how devoted firefighters are in striving to preserve life and how perilous their job is at times," he said.

"It somehow feels appropriate that a commemorative memorial event has been instigated for all firefighters who have lost their lives on duty."

Since 1723, 2,202 British firefighters have lost their lives on duty.

Members of the public can buy blue and red ribbons for £1 from local stations to be worn on the day and proceeds will help firefighters' widows and orphans.
