Sports centres and recreation grounds in the Spen Valley will receive a much-needed upgrade with a cash injection by a charitable trust which now runs Kirklees sports and leisure facilities.
Spenborough Baths will have £92,000 spent on it, Whitcliffe Mount Sports Centre is to get a £35,000 upgrade and £10,000 is to be spent on work at Spenborough Peak Physique in Cleckheaton.
Much of the detailed works involve improving the fabric of the buildings such as replacing glass, handrails, showers, tiles, ventilation, radiators, and repairing concrete. Improvements to surfacing, doors, upgrading of electrical services, improving the flooring in changing rooms and providing insulation will also be carried out.
Planned spending over the next two financial years involves further investments of £1.4m and £1.6m respectively. Works at the centres across Kirklees are the first phase of a four-year £6 million programme through a partnership with the recently-formed Kirklees Active Leisure - the non-profit-making charitable trust now responsible for running the sports, leisure centres and swimming pools.
