The glamour, romance and drama of Bollywood films is captured in an exhibition which is coming to Bradford's Cartwright Hall art gallery.

The exhibition, called Bollywood in Love, will be on show there from September 21 to November 10, with no admission charge. It features classic and contemporary posters, giant hoardings from Bombay, specially commissioned photography, digital art, and film footage from some of the best Bollywood romances.

Hosting the collection is seen as a boost for Bradford's bid to be named European Capital of Culture for 2008. Organisers say the exhibition reflects Bradford's international film heritage and expect it to attract thousands of visitors.

Cartwright Hall and the British Film Institute jointly produced the show as part of the Institute's celebration of south Asian film, ImagineAsia.

Cary Rajinder Sawhney, director of ImagineAsia, said: "Bollywood is one of the world's largest producers of films, challenging Hollywood. It's at the heart of Indian popular culture with its stars adored by millions around the world.

"This special exhibition will appeal to fans of all ages and provide the perfect introduction to newcomers."

A Mechanics in Love theme in the exhibition shows differences between Bollywood and Western romance films and highlights how lavish dance routines, songs and fantasy sequences let Bollywood characters express their love without breaking social taboos.

Other exhibition highlights include digital montages and photographs featuring the art of Bollywood billboards.

Bradford Council's executive member for the environment Anne Hawkesworth said: "I am sure it will attract both knowledgeable Bollywood fans and those curious for a glimpse into the magical world of Asian cinema."
