TRAFFIC through Otley this week was an absolute nightmare as motorists struggled with clashing roadworks and diversions.
While work to replace gas mains at Billams Hill was just halfway through its eight-week schedule, a decision was made to close the A59 at Kex Gill, Blubberhouses, for a week.
The result was an horrendous bottleneck at Otley Bridge - already at snail pace because of the gas works. Frustrated drivers sat for ages in stationary traffic while others tried their luck at dashing down side streets - only to find them also blocked.
Obviously, the work - in both cases - needs to be done. The gas mains must be replaced and the road at Kex Gill needs to be repaired - but surely the road could have survived for just three more weeks until Otley was free of the other roadworks.
We just have to hope that the work on the A59 is finished tomorrow and doesn't continue into next week when traffic will be forced into Otley because of repairs to Harewood Bridge.
ITS good to see community spirit is alive and well in Yeadon with the setting up of a task force to clean up the town.
A group of residents feel strongly enough about their surroundings to get up and do something about it. With Project Guiseley as their inspiration, they will work with the city council to access funds and gradually oversee the beautification of the town. They hope to eventually enter the town in the Yorkshire in Bloom contest, and with businesses and residents behind them, it should be achievable.
It is truly tragic that Danielle Skilbeck should lose both legs and now her fingers because of the deadly meningitis bug. Her mother, Lindsay, at just 20 years old, is having to face up to so much and be a tower of strength for her little girl. She has been overwhelmed by the support given to her by friends and strangers in her home town, and with their help, she is determined to do whatever she can for Danielle. She deserves all our support.
