Bradley resident John Wootton, pictured left, set the early pace, but had to settle for fourth overall and the Bob Marchant Trophy for best local in the 3-mile fell race at Bradley Family Day on Sunday.

Alfie Atkinson's course record was never threatened as Otley's Andrew Robertshaw won in 25 min 12 sec, almost a minute ahead of Jason Hemsley (Pudsey and Bramley). Skipton's Lee Athersmith was third and currently leads the U-20s English Fell championship.

First lady home was Lynne Whitaker of Hellifield in 38-00.

The Under-17s were led home by Stuart Hunn of Skipton, while Max Jones, of Holmfirth, was first home in the Under-14s.

Skipton runner James Mountain (6-57) led in the Under-12s while in the Under-9s Charley Winstanley (Trawden) edged out David Wilson (Wharfedale) by five seconds. Bradley's Jessica Wootton was leading girl in joint third.

The seven-mile mountain bike challenge over part of the fell course of Bradley Moor was won by Stefan Macina, who got the better of Jason Hemsley near the finish after they broke away from the pack.

Dave Woodhead was third and first vet over 40. First lady was Karen Waddington, first junior Matthew Greaves and first youth Luke Rosey.

Local athletes travel to the highest mountain in Britain this weekend when competing at Ben Nevis. Nearer to home it's the 26-mile off-road Yorkshireman from Haworth on Sunday (9.30am). Entries are accepted on the day, contact Peter Carr (01535 600853).
