West Yorkshire's striking firemen today decided to give the latest peace offer a chance. At a special meeting in Leeds, their leaders voted unanimously to seek further discussions on some points in the offer. But they rejected other clauses out of hand. Fire Brigades' Union regional chairman, Mr. Dave Matthews, said: "This offer is a basis for further discussions".

In his annual report for 1951, the Medical Officer for Health for Batley (Dr. John F. Caith-ness) reports that for the first time for over 60 years there has been no case of diptheria to record. Measles and whooping cough were the most prevalent diseases during the year. There was a marked increase in the incidence of whooping cough.
