PAUL NEWBY picked up a bronze medal at the Karate World Championships - and returned home in time to see the birth of his first baby.
Paul, from Silsden, won individual bronze in Madrid and now hopes the sport will be accepted as a demonstration event at the Athens Olympics. "I was just seconds from reaching the final, leading with two clear points with eight seconds to go in the semis and the guy who beat me went on to win gold 6-0."
"I beat a Dutch fighter 6-1 to win bronze and will be qualified for the Olympics if karate is accepted."
He was back in England just in time to share the birth of Bobbi with his girlfriend Anna Pawson.
