Two men have been jailed for four years and three months for their part in the Bradford riots.

Hafiz Sharif, 21, and Arfan Younis, 22, each threw a stone during the violent disturbances on July 7 last year. They both admitted riot.

The city's Crown Court heard how Sharif, of Ashwell Road, Manningham, hurled a stone towards the police, hitting a building. He was spotted a few hours later with a golf club in his hand but did not use it as a weapon. He also held an unlit petrol bomb at one point before he put it down, the court was told.

He surrendered to police after the Telegraph & Argus published his picture.

Younis, of Marshfield Place, was caught throwing a stone towards officers, holding a metal pipe and brandishing a piece of wood in a threatening manner. His picture was also published last April but he was arrested at his home.

Mitigating for Sharif, Rekha Kodi Kara said he was "really sorry" and did not mean to do it. She said: "Common sense had given way to mob mentality."

For Younis, Tahir Khan said he had been the victim of a racist assault in the city centre. She said: "He's not a hardened criminal. All the good work he has done building up his life has been undone on this day of madness."
