A new sports centre, to be used by school students, the Bradford Bulls and the local community, is taking shape in Apperley Bridge.
The £3 million facility is being developed on the site of Woodhouse Grove School. The independent school has gone into partnership with the Bulls and Leeds Metropolitan University on the venture, which will be the rugby league stars' training base and the venue for the 'Fat Camps' for teenagers run by the university during the summer holidays.
The sports centre is expected to be finished in June and will be opened by Minister for Sport Richard Caborn.
At the heart of the new facilities is a sports hall for activities such as cricket, netball, badminton, basketball, tennis and football. There will be two fitness suites, an aerobics studio, two seminar rooms, a medical room and five changing rooms.
The scheme includes a new road and car park and new workshops for the school's estates and grounds staff.
The facilities have been designed to meet the needs of the school but also to serve clubs and the wider community.
Rugby League world champions the Bradford Bulls will establish their first team and academy training base in the centre. Leeds Metropolitan University's teenage weight-loss camp, the so-called 'Fat Camp', will be based at the school every summer and there are plans to extend its activities throughout the year.
David Humphreys, head at Woodhouse Grove, said: "These new facilities will provide superb new opportunities - from school athlete to amateur enthusiast, from professional sportsman to teenager needing to develop a healthy lifestyle."
Once the centre is complete the school will convert its gym to a theatre, which will also be available for amateur dramatic groups, as well as the school.
Abi Ekoku, chief executive of the Bradford Bulls, said: "The new facilities will be significantly better for our players, as they have been designed to our own specification, and will be first-class, befitting the club's playing status."
He said part of the new centre would be exclusively for the Bulls' use but there would be "some crossover", with open training sessions and close co-operation between Bulls coaches and the school's PE staff.
