Villagers have called time on a boycott of their local after its owners agreed to discuss a blazing row over its external illuminations.

Campaigner Matt Palmer had urged people to stay away from the Generous Pioneer in Burley-in-Wharfedale where the brightness of its blue lights has even been outlawed by Bradford Council planners.

But he agreed to a truce after Keith Bennett, property director for the pub's owners Tom Cobleigh Ltd, said he would discuss future plans for the pub's lighting with a community representative.

In a letter to campaigners, Mr Bennett conceded that the controversial blue strip lighting would not necessarily be reinstalled at the pub in Ilkley Road even if the company wins an appeal against the Council's decision forbidding their use.

Mr Palmer said: "I am delighted the company has recognised the strength of local feeling.

"I trust there will now be constructive dialogue with the community and the lights will be a thing of the past.

"Mr Bennett has shown genuine concern at the impact of the lights and I am sure the company will wish to work with the community to resolve the issue."

Northampton-based Tom Cobleigh lodged an appeal against the Council's decision to refuse planning permission for the blue strip lights around the outside of the pub.

Mr Palmer sent a 200-name petition to planners calling on Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott to reject the company's bid.

He said: "I hope the Deputy Prime Minister sees sense and denies the appeal to ensure this doesn't happen again in Burley or elsewhere."
