Stand off Mick Walker scored the all- important second-half try which enabled Victoria Rangers to pull off a shock second-round win over Premier Division leaders Siddal in the Pennine Presidents Cup.
Former international referee Fred Lindop ensured the game got under way when he authorised a switch from a frozen Newlands to the second team pitch at the former Eccleshill School.
Rangers' enterprise was duly rewarded when centre Tony Fretwell crossed out wide after the lively Walker
spotted a gap in the visitors defence.
Prop forward Tim Hunt made no mistake with the difficult conversion and was once again bang on target with a penalty when the visitors infringed at the play-the-ball.
Siddal broke away for an unexpected try in the corner to close the half 8-4. The Halifax side showed their pedigree when after kicking an early penalty they produced a length-of-the-field kick and chase to score a converted try and take the lead 12-8.
The Vics laid siege to the Siddal line and a sparkling passing move saw Aussie half back Walker glide over under the posts for a stunning match-winning touchdown. Prop Hunt added an easy two and substitute Jason Jubb produced a late drop goal to give the Vics their second Premier scalp of the competition.
West Bowling B were unlucky to lose out 24-18 in a cracking Division Five encounter at Huddersfield Syngenta.
Bowling's veteran stand off Craig Hillam showed he has lost none of his scoring prowess with an early penalty and then scored two excellent tries which he also converted to put his side just two points in arrears 16-14 at the interval.
Scrum half Darren Holdsworth gave them hope when he crossed for a sparkling individual effort but despite a huge input from loose forward Rob Howe and strong running from centre Eddie Womersley, they could not breach the Huddersfield line again.
Bradford Dudley Hill got back to winning ways with a 20-18 success at Shaw Cross in Dewsbury.
Hill took the lead after 15 minutes when stand off Ryan Dickinson put in a great cross-field kick which found brother Alex who went in by the posts. Chris Robinson converted.
Shaw then drew level when a chip over the top was gathered by Ashley Lyndsey who found winger Adam Farrar and he strode in unopposed. Dave Lilley added the extras.
Hill took the lead early in the second half when Robinson put in a huge bomb which the winger fumbled to leave Liam Jarvis an easy run to the line.
Robinson added the conversion and with two more penalties, Hill took control.
Then against the run of play, Shaw hit back with two converted tries to take a two-point lead and with time running out Hill looked to have thrown it away but a break by Sean Dickinson led to Simon Thompson putting an astute pass out to speedy centre Mark Ackroyd. He drew the defence and sent winger Craig Tyman in at the corner to give Hill a deserved win.
