Skateboard mania swept West Yorkshire as youngsters demonstrated their favourite Christmas presents. But ambulancemen throughout the region were kept busy in the wake of thrills and spills. "Practically every other emergency has involved a skateboarder," said one ambulance brigade spokesman.

The combined attendance of the two Christmas matches between Huddersfield and Halifax was 39,702 - 18,000 at Thrum Hall and 21,702 at Fartown. Apart from the visit of the Australians to Fartown on 1 November the attendance there was the largest since Huddersfield played Halifax in the first round of the Rugby League Cup last February.
