Braithwaite People's Association is showing the world that it is a Mickey Mouse outfit.

The rodent and many of his friends from Disney's animated films stare from the walls of the BPA's headquarters.

They make up a colourful mural around the walls of the Keith Thompson Centre's children's room.

And the scenes painted by John Philip have inspired fellow Braithwaite and Guard House residents to take up painting.

John, father of BPA treasurer John Philip, has been invited to run an art class beginning this month at the centre.

A few places are still available for local people on the once-a-week evening course

Mr Philip senior has lived in Braithwaite for several years since travelling from his native Scotland to join his son.

An architectural draughtsman by trade, he painted for pleasure for many years, also doing art work for charities such as the Round Table.

The Keith Thompson Centre has had a Disney mural for more than a decade, but Mr Philip felt the children deserved an improved version.

Since April he has been painting the popular characters one by one and has almost completed all four walls.

Residents' requests that Mr Philip pass on his skills coincided with Keighley College's plans to organise courses at the Keith Thompson Centre.

The centre is one of the college's "satellite colleges" aimed at taking education into local communities.

Mr Phillip said the new classes for beginners, aged 16 or over, would start once the Keith Thompson Centre reopened on January 6.

He said: "If some of the students become artists then we could have an exhibition here at the end of the year."
