A commemorative wood raising funds for cancer research is taking shape with another 100 trees set to be planted.

The 1.5 hectare Telegraph & Argus Bradford Can... Cancer Research Appeal Commemorative Wood, at Bradford Council's St Ives Estate, Harden, Bingley, will be filled with oak, birch and rowan trees.

They have been bought in memory of someone or to commemorate a special event, such as a birthday or anniversary.

At the first planting day in November, Bradford-born television presenter Richard Whiteley placed the first sapling in the ground.

Afterwards, another 103 trees were planted, under the supervision of tree-planting organisation Forest of Bradford.

Among the buyers were nurses from Bradford Royal Infirmary's Ward 19, which treats cancer patients; grandparents commemorating the birth of grandchildren and a dog-lover who bought three trees. The next planting day is on Wednesday, January 22.

A further 97 trees are due to be planted, bringing the total in the wood to more than 200.

Bookings are already being taken to plant at another special event on Monday, March 3.

Eventually there will be 1,000 trees in the wood.

Tish Burton, Bradford Can... Appeal manager, said the response to the scheme had been unbelievable.

"The idea of the Commemorative Wood seems to have really captured the imagination of people across Bradford.

"They have been buying trees for a variety of reasons and the feedback we have been getting is fantastic."

Trees cost £50 each and every buyer will receive a special certificate.

Plaques in the wood will show the location of each individual tree.

The Bradford Can... Appeal is now £150,000 away from reaching its target of £1 million for cancer research at Bradford Royal Infirmary and the University of Bradford.
