Solicitors are moving into Bradford's two major police stations in a bid to speed up the justice system.

Two teams of lawyers based at the Crown Prosecution Service city headquarters in Windsor House, Manchester Road, are relocating.

One team will be stationed at Bradford Central and the other will be based at Toller Lane police station.

They will be handling cases for Bradford and Bingley magistrates and the youth courts.

The idea is to prevent the doubling up of paperwork and avoid the delays.

Similar schemes are already up and running in Halifax, Leeds, Huddersfield and Wakefield.

Neil Franklin, the Chief Crown Prosecutor for the CPS in West Yorkshire, said: "This is good news for Bradford.

"With our knowledge and experience we can make sure we are charging the right people with the right charges.

"The police are delighted and are clamouring for us to provide this service at every charging station in West Yorkshire."

He said when the scheme was first piloted in Halifax the number of prosecutions went up.

That was because previously many cases were collapsing in the time it was taking between the police first taking details and the CPS seeing a case file which, in some cases, could take up to ten weeks, he said.

Chief Superintendent Dave Richardson, divisional commander of Bradford South, said: "We welcome this development. It gives us an opportunity to work closely with our partners and it is another step forward in making the criminal justice system more effective."

The move is part of the Government's plans to overhaul the criminal justice system.

Prosecutors working on Crown Court cases will remain based at Windsor House.
