The Keighley News has helped to save public toilets from closure at a top Brontland beauty spot. A report in the KN on December 27 revealing plans by Bradford Council to close the toilets on Penistone Hill, near Haworth, was used to help persuade members of the council's Executive Committee on Tuesday not to close the site.
An amendment proposing to transfer ownership to the owners of Penistone Country Park, in reality a transfer of responsibility between council departments, was accepted, meaning that the arts, heritage and leisure department would take responsibility for the toilets.
Cllr Barry Thorne said: "There was an ammendment put forward by the Labour group. We actually used the Keighley News story to sway the executive.
"The stupidity of the closure of the toilets on Pennistone Hill shows that operating from the centre of Bradford you do not have any idea of how things are in this area, and that can be very damaging to tourism."
At Tuesday's meeting members passed a motion to close six other public toilets in the Keighley area, representing a saving of just under £100,000 for the council.
Sites at Main Road in East Morton and Main Road, Steeton, are set to close with immediate effect and toilets at Shaw Top, in Oxenhope, are to be demolished. Toilets at Church Street, in Cullingworth, Cross Roads Park entrance and Lower Town, Oxenhope, will receive no further investment and will close when needing repairs.
